Hurry, Hurry, Hurry!

I'm going to the grocery store in 25 minutes. As usual, for some reason, all of my food is on their shelves and I've got to go get it from them. I have no idea what to make for dinner.

Suggestions?

Update! Well, that certainly was helpful. Thanks.

Another failed experiment in community.

Sorry... have the chills, and my head hurts. I think I'm growing a flu inside me.

I'll have a suggestion next time. Right now, chicken soup is about all that sounds good to me...

First we make similar posts, then you say things I wanted to say (only better), and now we run out of food at the same time?

I now proclaim you my blog brother. Can we go to the store? Huh, can we, can we?

Hmmm, I notice the red line here, too. Has it always been here, and I just didn't notice? Or did Blogger do a good thing yesterday during the "time of trouble?"

Um, what red line do you speak of?

In a fit of lacking inspiration, I had Chicken Pot Pie. Guess I'm still celebrating Frozen-Food Day.

Sorry, I was out feeding the masses ("would you like an egg roll with that?").

My suggestion would've been to have Chinese takeout. ;)

I wish there was Chinese take-out anywhere close to me. Really really really. I just love Chinese food, or at least the Americanized version of it. I have no idea if it's genuine, just that it's yummy. :)

I had Chinese for lunch a couple of days ago.

Here's a question for MWT and John. Have you noticed a distinct difference between Chinese Food on the East Coast and on the West Coast?

For one thing, the fried rice is completely different. On the West Coast, it this puffy, soft, sort of ragged stuff while in the East, its more like the grains retain more individual integrity. (You can tell I've never written food reviews, 'cause I'm not sure if I've described that in any coherent manner.)

Heh, you're asking way the wrong person here. ;) I don't think I've ever had Americanized Chinese on the west coast, as that's where all my relatives live and anytime I'm there, we're going to the authentic restaurants. The one time I was in New York, it was also chock full of relatives (wedding), and thus also meant authentic restaurants. We don't generally eat fried rice in restaurants; fried rice is "last night's leftovers tossed together in a wok."

Rice in general though ... you've probably noticed that there's lots of different kinds. Short-grain sushi rice, Carolina long-grain, jasmine, basmati, Korean, Mexican, etc. etc. I think of "cheap Chinese takeout rice" as a category. ;) It's entirely possible that the west coast cheapest possible rice is a different breed from what the east coast uses. Although generally speaking, the more upscale the restaurant the better quality of rice.

As for Americanized Chinese, to me it's more or less the same no matter where you go. Some kind of meat, a mix of veggies, stir-fried together in some kind of brown sauce or white sauce. Even the menues all look the same.

Which is not something that's unique to Chinese takeouts. Americanized Mexican is like that too. I can go to any of them and order "#8 combo" which will invariably get me an enchilada, a tamale, refried beans and rice.

Shawb,

When you come to Morgantown for the cookies, we've got a ton of Chinese/Asian restaurants here. Our favorite restaurant serves Chinese, Malasian & Thai (but Thai for Americans, not that stuff that takes the top of your head off), a Chinese take-out place that has excellent vegetarian selections, a couple random places, and then the expected buffets which serve food that can't possibly be Chinese, because the vast majority of it is deep fried, which is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

It's one of the benefits of living in a university town.

Nathan, the misspelling-indicating red underline in the comments box. I started seeing it in a number of blogger comment boxes on Sunday, including yours, but now I don't see it any more. Maybe it is another thing that IE6 doesn't do, but Firefox does, because I have to use IE6 at work, and I use Firefox at home.

I could really use some misspelling help occasionally.

Well, no, I misspell just fine. Don't need any misspelling help.

But I could use some spelling help.

I think that's a Firefox feature. I've always seen it. But I refoose to bee roooled by a stinkin' red lyne.

Sunday night we had kalbi, rice and steamed broccoli. Yum. (Kalbi are thinly sliced beef short ribs, cooked quickly on a very hot grill and basted w/ Korean BBQ sauce. We cheat by using Yoshida sauce as a marinade, rather than a more authentic Korean BBQ sauce.)

I would have responded more quickly but I've been offline for a day - flying to ANC and then getting settled back into my office here.

I just heard about a place called Dokebi Bar & Grill in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. Its a Korean do-it-yourself BBQ and I can't wait to try it.
