Construction Begins!

I'm messing around with the blog. Feel free to comment as random changes magically appear. Also, please note that since I'm a blurter at heart, there will be new postings during this period of visual mayhem. Scroll down to see if anything new has shown up. Hint, hint.

Brooklyn: A housekeeping note -- Over at Janiece's joint, you mentioned her comments recap was stuck on August. It is for me, too. But so is yours -- stuck on Dec. 18 to be precise. FYI.

As far as I can tell, it's a Blogger-wide problem. I have no idea why it struck different blogs on different dates.

Well, it sounds like it's time for you to break open a WordPress account and roll you some fine homegrown PHP and MySQL now, doesn't it? I mean, you've come so far in the last two years. XD

As far as I may have come, I still don't know what PHP or MySQL are. As we speak, I'm running around the internet looking at various available templates...and realizing I don't really know the difference between a template and a layout (or a background).

Time for some re-edumacation.

Nathan, PHP is PHP. It's a computer language you use to tell the website what to do. WordPress (the blog software I use) is 100% PHP. About half the pages on my site are PHP, and the countdown on my sidebar is php code, as is the random quote generator and the random image generator I'm running on my website and on my weblog.

MySQL is a database system. Instead of using an interface like MS Access does, you can access your database with commands in php.

In my book database, you open a php page. You type in the name of an author and press the submit button. The php code that generates the page contains commands that open up the MySQL database, searches the author list for the name you entered, and then brings up every book written by that author.

Does that help? If not, I can try explaining it another way.
