It's not enough for them to have faith in their God, Vishnu, Allah, etc., but they want everyone else to know about and praise them for it and take part in it as well.

Isn't this what church is for? Go sing your craptastic songs about God and Country there; not in the public schools that my taxes help to finance. I've always been very careful never to tell them that they cannot do such and such because of the religion of their parents (or absence of one, as it were). Instead, I made sure that I counteract anything that I viewed as excessive proselytizing with my own world-view.

The net effect is that my kids never had to opt out of anything that they viewed as fun. And thus far, their world-views are not very different from mine.

Then, the never had to decide on this particular type of song. If you get 'em while they are young and still malleable, you can brainwash them.

And Nathan -- I agree with Janiece -- you aren't and weren't a whiny git. I understand how it feels to be singled out as different -- that "walk of shame" feeling. Yeah, I hear you.

I had a very uncomfortable conversation with one of my staff at my former office. I don't remember how we got on the subject, but the ultimate outcome was her complete crogglement when I explained that when the US is touted as a Christian nation, I feel uncomfortable and marginalized and even a bit uneasy.
