* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
NEW YORK (MANHATTAN) COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST NEW YORK...
BRONX COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST NEW YORK...
EASTERN BERGEN COUNTY IN NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...
* UNTIL 545 PM EDT...
* AT 515 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO NEAR
ENGLEWOOD...OR NEAR BERGENFIELD...MOVING EAST AT 19 MPH.
* THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR...
RIVERDALE BY 525 PM...
EAST TREMONT BY 530 PM...
CO-OP CITY AND CITY ISLAND BY 540 PM...
IN ADDITION TO THE TORNADO...THIS STORM IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
QUARTER SIZE HAIL AND DESTRUCTIVE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS.
THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS IN A BASEMENT. GET UNDER A
WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF NO BASEMENT IS
AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING IN AN
INTERIOR HALLWAY OR ROOM SUCH AS A CLOSET. USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO
COVER YOUR BODY AND ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.
IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A
SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE
NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.
This is not a normal thing for Manhattan!

That damn thunderstorm / tropical downpour on Monday was not very usual either.
I was outside just before and after that storm. I'm pretty sure the temperature dropped 25 degrees in 15 minutes. Freaky!

I am safely home now after driving through a pissing rainstorm...which stopped dead the moment I was through my front door.
I have to say, that photo really doesn't do justice to what the sky looked like. The dark part was pitch black and just plain evil looking. And the line between light and dark was a lot more distinct than seems to show in the photo. It was pretty cool.
Glad you are home safe! We had a similar sky the other evening...beautiful and frightening at the same time.

I live on the extreme eastern end of Tornado Alley and you know what we do when there's a tornado warning and sirens going off and loudspeakers all over town yelling at us to get into our basements? We go outside to dig the dark-gray-green clouds and groove on the increased ozone in the air. Well, until the hail starts anyway.

Oh, don't get me wrong. You've certainly proved your pluck, Junior Nature Ranger. But here's what you have to aspire to. Remember: always have fresh batteries and an extra memory card!
