Obama's Speech!

It was masterful. But it was not perfect.

He is my candidate. I like the fact that he used the word inextricable in his speech and didn't trip over it at all. GWB could practice that for a month and not pull it off.

I like what he has to say and I think he's got some actual plans behind what he says. I think he and his wife are both two really, really, really, scary-smart people. He's not where he is tonight without a plan. I'm convinced that the first part of the plan was his, and his alone more than four years ago...that got him put up before the last Democratic National Convention. That's what launched him.

So, anyway, I was really impressed by the speech. I didn't hear anything I'd classify as a misstep or wrong.

But he missed something. And I'm disappointed about one thing.

He didn't once mention how Bush has trampled the Constitution. He didn't once say how he'd reverse that situation. I won''t go into all of the laws, (one that he recently voted for) that roll back our Constitutional Rights, but I will say that only the next President will have the chance to fix some of the damage that GWB has done.

I may forward this to his campaign. I told GF right at the beginning of the speech that something about the Constitution was what I was waiting to hear about.

You can do better Barak.

He's in a tight spot, playing the constitution card could easily blow up in his face.

But, yeah, what you said.

I'm glad I'm not the only one impressed he used a five-syllable word, without calling attention to it, and without stumbling across it. That was majorly impressive.

And what Jim said.

It's not fair. Jim always says it first.

I agree with Jim: he's in a tight spot, especially with the vote you mentioned. The sad truth is that much of the Constitutional damage was comitted by Congress, whether by acts of comission or omission. Congress could have voted down laws, could have passed oversight legislation, could have held hearings....

Indeed, Congress could have done all the things they did the last time we were in a situation like this: it's depressingly telling that the Bush Administration's legacy is a result of actively stomping down the legislative and judicial oversight that was implemented during the Ford Administration after Congressional hearings concerning the worst excesses of the Nixon and Johnson Administrations. (Speaking of which, isn't that a fine President: all of the illegal surveillance and Executive over-reaching of the Nixon years and all of the military and foreign policy fiascos of the Johnson years, and not even detente with China or sweeping Civil Rights reforms to show for it. Nice job, George: you managed to combine the worst qualities of Johnson and Nixon with absolutely none of their virtues or achievements--that really does set you up as a leading contender for shittiest President ever, doesn't it? Your place in history is secure: a future President may have to rape a puppy during a televised State Of The Union Address to dethrone you from your dubiously degenerate perch.)

So, yeah, maybe just as well Senator Obama didn't hit the Constitutional point.

Eric - right on about Congress abdicating their responsibilities. As a libertarian, I have the cynical view that Obama and the rest of the leftist leadership actually like what GWB has done, because it allows them more latitude to enact nanny state crap once the Constitutional barriers are down. They're all statists, it's just a difference of which part of your life they want the state to meddle in.

I thought it was great. My issues are the war, health care, & the economy/jobs. Having just lost my part time job, which I need in addition to my full time job & my pet sitting business to survive, I keep flashing on a video clip of Bush w/ a woman who said she had 3 jobs. The moron said isn't this a great country where you can have 3 jobs? She doesn't have 3 jobs because she wants to you stupid asshole! She has to to survive!
I just thought it was a thrilling, historic night, to see a black man accept the nomination for Pres. I'm 45, & never thought it would happen so soon in my life, if ever. That's not why he's my candidate, but it was an amazing night for me.

46 Minutes of Democrat talking points and blatant rhetoric. GOT I wish I could have those 3/4ths of an hour of my life back!

Jeez Leanright,

Did you expect something else? Nobody forced you to watch.

I was flying - I'll have to find it 'on demand' this weekend and watch.

Wait, the Democratic National Convention was only 46 minutes of "Democrat talking points and blatant rhetoric"?! I thought that thing ran for, like, four days. If I'd known it was around the length of a Law And Order episode, I would have invited myself over to somebody's house to watch it.

Still, I can understand being upset when you compare the Democrats' propaganda festival to the Republicans' wide-open meeting--I mean, the keynote speaker this Tuesday at the Republican National Convention is Sam Webb, with Howard Zinn introducing John McCain on Thursday.

Nathan...YOU ARE RIGHT. I guess I was expecting the rapture to occur, and I didn't want to miss it. My choice to watch. My bad.
